GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION NEWS

Bad rotation? Or just a bad day? A journal can help you distinguish

Advancing to the clinical years can be intimidating as well as exciting. This is the point where many students say that they actually start to feel like a doctor.

You will be using this time to think about career choices. To get the most out of this experience, you will need to evaluate and reflect upon what you liked and disliked about each rotation.

A journal is a great tool to help you make your decision. Record your thoughts, stories, feelings and follies during your clinical rotations. Don’t forget to add some descriptions of the cases you see, the call schedule, notes on the staff and any unique experiences or cases you’ve encountered.

After time, review what you recorded to see if what you remember as  being a negative experience was, upon reflection, just a bad day. It is easy to think that you will remember, but when the time comes to make the decision, all those memories can easily mingle together, and that's where a journal can really help.

Barreiro in first class of Fellows of the National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators

Timothy J. Barreiro, D.O. (’97), clinical assistant professor of internal medicine at St. Joseph Health Center (Warren, Ohio), was inducted into the inaugural class of the National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators (NAOME) Friday, April 17.

The induction took place at the awards banquet of the 2009 annual meeting for the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine in Maryland.

NAOME was created by the American Academy of Osteopathic Educators to develop a community of outstanding osteopathic medical educators who have met rigorous standards of academic scholarship. Each Academy Fellow serves as a leader and mentor for academic scholarship in the osteopathic medical education profession for a five-year period.

OMM NEWS

Baker wins case presentation award

Robert Baker, OMS II, ranked second place in the A. Hollis Wolf Case Presentations Competition at the recent annual convention of the American Academy of Osteopathy for his case presentation on osteopathic manipulative treatment for the Lower Cross Syndrome.

This is the first time OU-COM has been represented in the competition, according to Stevan Walkowski, D.O. (’89), assistant professor of family medicine, who also attended the convention.  “Robert Baker is a major advocate for the use of OMM in practice,” Walkowski says. “His presentation reflects his advancedknowledge and skill set.”

Baker won a full basic biodynamic course and a $300 cash prize.

Online resources can help you incorporate OMM into patient care

Browse, read and/or download more than 140 PowerPoint and Word presentations, case studies and morning reports in seven specialty areas that reinforce the principles of osteopathic medicine in the clinical setting.

Developed and distributed by the CORE Osteopathic Principles and Practices Committee, the online information provides you with the tools to help you incorporate OMM into patient care.

RPAC NEWS

Orientation planned for new members

Two CORE orientation sessions are planned for first year residents and physicians during August.

A new event, the orientation sessions will allow new members of CORE to learn about the larger system they have joined. They will also learn about ORAC, the infrastructure of CORE and its history, fostering positive interactions, team building, conflict resolution, communication skills, conducting research, portfolio development and various resources offered by CORE.

“Most trainees are not aware of the requirements to belonging to an OPTI, and what that entails such as research and specialized training,” explains Pam Royston. The new orientations are being offered as a result of tightened standards and accreditation standards, she said.

The dates and locations of the orientation sessions are to be announced.
