Research Requirements & Opportunities

Students

  • OCOM 785 - Required curricular requirement for OU-COM students
  • Research and Scholarly Advancement Fellowship (RSAF)
  • Research Rotation Elective
  • International Programs
  • Non-curricular Independent Research - Research for “fun”

Residents

Residents have to fulfill a required Residency Research Requirement for their specialty college. These requirements may be raised or modified by your Program Director, so consult and seek their approval before you start your project. To view a list of residency requirements, please click here.

Some tips for success:

  • Multi-center study among residents simplifies the requirement and potentially increases your chance for a publication.
  • Enlist a medical student to help in your study (Literature review, data collection, etc.). Students request that you include their name in a poster and depending on the extent of their contribution, in the journal submission. NOTE: Students need IRB approval, so allow a few months to get the paperwork in order.
  • Do not let a good study die – enlist a junior resident to continue the project
    • Increases N for possible publication, helps a junior resident
  • Identify dissemination targets early
    • Publications – provides guidelines for eventual submission
    • Posters – provides dates, deadlines, and rules for abstract submission
