Columbus is a city full of character and class, with a lot that’s impressive. It offers big-city amenities with a small-town quality of life, as well as the flavor and excitement of a Big Ten University town. As Ohio’s capital, Columbus is not only a seat of government but also a cultural, educational, and recreational hub. It provides a bevy of family attractions, a vibrant arts community, world-class entertainment, and college and professional sports. The Department of Medical Education has compiled a list of housing and recreational information that is popular with physicians, residents, and staff:
Housing
Columbus housing choices range from downtown condominiums to suburban living. Among the many choices are Columbus’ historic neighborhoods, such as German Village or Victorian Village, located in the heart of the city. For country quiet, one might prefer to reside in Powell or New Albany. There are plenty of options to suit your individual needs, whatever your tastes may be.
Fine Food
You’ll find a truly international cuisine in Columbus, at everything from upscale restaurants in the Short North and Grandview, to lively bistros in German Village, or popular suburban cafés. Enjoy continental, Thai, deli, Italian, Chinese, Korean, or “plain country cooking.”
Sports
For sports enthusiasts, Columbus offers a variety of sporting events. Watch the Ohio State Buckeyes play the Michigan Wolverines in one of the long-standing college rivalries. Support the Blue Jackets, Columbus’ national ice hockey team, as they bring excitement to the Arena District. Join fans of the Crew, our national soccer team, or the Clippers, our New York Yankees minor league team.
Music/Nightlife
Whether you like rock or reggae, Columbus offers a wide selection of concerts and music halls. See a national act perform in one of Columbus’ large arenas – Germain Amphitheater or Nationwide Arena. Smaller venues, such as the Newport Music Hall and Promo West Pavilion put on over 400 concerts per year. For weekend fun or a simple game of pool, visit one of Columbus’ many bars and nightclubs.
Art/Museums/Zoo
Residents can enjoy an array of art establishments and museums, including the Columbus Museum of Art, Wexner Center for the Performing Arts, COSI (an exciting science museum), and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. In addition, the Short North is home to galleries and boutiques where art lovers can view photography, sculpture, glass art, and painting. The Short North also hosts a Gallery Hop the first Saturday of every month.
Theatres/Movies
Downtown Columbus hosts nationally-touring Broadway and performing arts exhibitions. The Palace Theater, the Ohio Theater, and the Southern Theater have staged Miss Saigon, Stomp, Phantom of the Opera, and Rent, as well as the yearly offerings of Opera Columbus. There are also many venues where you can catch a movie. Several AMC theaters and the Arena Grand Theater offer mainstream movie-viewing pleasure, or visit one of the Drexel theaters to enjoy rare or independent films. For a unique performance, visit 2Cos or the Shadowbox Cabaret, sister companies that combine live music and theater.
