  • There are exceptional opportunities for hands on practice during rotations here.  Students are often first assist in surgeries.
  • Many of our preceptors also teach first and second year medical students, are familiar with the particular needs of third and fourth year medical students, and are trained as teachers
  • O’Bleness provides a great deal of one-on-one support to its students and a very warm environment
  • The patient population is unique and reflects the rural and poor nature of Southeast Ohio.  Students will see a lot of diabetes and other diseases common in this type of population
  • Call is optional on most rotations.  Students are required to do call for 2 weekends on Geriatrics. 
  • Students receive a 10% discount at the hospital cafeteria
  • We are a 10-minute walk from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/ with access to its facilities and resources, such as the CORE Research office
  • There are many faculty involved in research in the Athens area, and many opportunities for students to become involved in those projects

  • The City of Athens is rural, small, safe and welcoming, yet culturally diverse because it is a university town.  The K-12 school system here is very good – the city is known as a good place to raise a family.
  • OU-COM is part of a large university, Ohio University http://www.ohio.edu/, which provides access to a large number of educational and cultural events, despite the small size of Athens itself.
  • The Athens area is near the largest forest and recreational areas in the State of Ohio – you have access to hiking, cycling, bike paths, horseback riding, rock climbing, boating, camping, etc.
