Additional Points of Interest about this CORE Site Hospital

  • Free standing Heart Center Pavilion opened Summer 2007 and  houses 52 beds, six cardiac cath labs plus open heart operating suites with recovery areas and state of the art technology and facility design.  Building is directly across from the main hospital;
  • Comprehensive maternity services, including Level 3 Perinatal Center - highest state designation for treating high-risk mothers and babies;
  • Level 1 Trauma Center (highest designation) for both adult and pediatrics.  Four Life Flight helicopters respond to 19 counties with over 1.3 million population;
  • Mercy Children’s Hospital providing care through a 72- bed hospital within a hospital including new and expanded NICU and over 20 pediatric subspecialties;
  • Region’s only Burn and Reconstructive Center;
  • Comprehensive Cancer program including the region’s only site for peripheral stem cell harvest and reinfusion
  • Advanced Surgery Center with 18 modern surgical suites, many dedicated to specialty areas, including the daVinci Surgical Robotic System for minimally invasive surgeries;
  • Robotic Simulation Lab features Human Patient Simulators (HPS), state of the art training tools for medical professionals;

  • Advanced neurosurgical intensive care unit;
  • Orthopedics program that includes joint replacement surgery;
  • Region’s only hospital based Palliative Care unit for both adult and pediatric patients;
  • Students are provided pagers at no cost and a monthly meal stipend.  Continental or full breakfast provided at weekly didactics.  Free lunch provided at weekly Grand Rounds & Cancer Conferences.
  • Although this is a very large medical center, the institution has been dedicated to medical student and allied health professional education for decades.  Students are part of the health care team and respond according to the needs of the rotation.
  • Students will take call depending on the specific rotation requirements.  For example, on the 4-week osteopathic OB/gyn service, students can expect 4-5 assigned call dates with 2 of the dates scheduled on weekends.  Students will be well prepared to handle their first night alone when they start their internship/residency.
  • Although the majority of physicians are MD, preceptors are very happy to have our osteopathic students on their services.  Many specialty physicians specifically request our osteopathic medical students.
  • As an inner-city hospital, students will be exposed to a highly diverse population and a wide range of pathology. 

Information of Local Interest
Rental properties:  depends on urban (Toledo area is less expensive) or suburban locale (Perrysburg, Maumee, Sylvania areas are more expensive but closer to recreational/shopping venues that are more appealing to 20-30 year olds.  One bedroom apartments can be found for $475 per month.  Average price is around $600-800 depending on how many utilities/gym facilities are included.

The nearly three dozen colleges and universities within an hour’s drive of Toledo include the University of Toledo Medical Center (former Medical College of Ohio); Bowling Green State University; Owens Community College; Lourdes College;

Area Public School Systems include Toledo Public School System (PSS); Sylvania PSS; Maumee PSS; Perrysburg PSS;

Area Private Schools include large number of elementary schools ranging from charter to private faith based schools.  Of the six private high schools in Toledo proper, five are Catholic. 

Nationally ranked attractions include the Toledo Zoo and the internationally recognized Toledo Museum of Art.  The Museum is free to the public except for special exhibitions and offers a wide range of educational classes for children and adults (glass blowing, drawing, painting, photography, etc)

Other attractions: 

  • Toledo is located on the western tip of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Maumee River – lots of boating and fishing opportunities
  • Toledo is home to the Mud Hens (AAA Farm Team for the Detroit Tigers). In 2002, the Hens moved into their brand new digs in Downtown Toledo, the $39 million, state-of-the-art Fifth Third Field named best minor league park by Newsweek.  Other sports team include the Toledo Storm hockey or one of the MAC conference teams at University of Toledo or Bowling Green State University;
  • Theaters include the Valentine Theater and Stranahan Theaters hold professional venues.  There are also several local theater groups in Toledo and the surrounding communities.
  • Toledo hosts both the Toledo Opera and Toledo Symphony and two ballet companies;
  • Close to pro sports teams.  One hour from Detroit, 2-hours from Cleveland.
  • 40 area golf courses and hosts the Jamie Farr LPGA tournament; Twelve Metroparks and two trail corridors make up the 9,000-acre park system, and additional land is being acquired for future parks.  Each Metropark is located in at least one of the county's primary natural regions: the Great Black Swamp, Oak Openings, the Maumee River, the Ottawa River and Swan Creek. But no two Metroparks are alike. Each has unique gems that set it apart. . All Metroparks open daily 7 a.m. to dark year round. Free of charge.
  • International companies include state of art Daimler Chrysler Jeep plant, Owens Illinois and Owens Corning companies. 
  • Summer is filled with neighborhood/cultural festivals – German, Irish, Hindu, Polish, Hungarian, African American to name a few;
  • Restaurants include everything from the usual chain restaurants to diverse ethic cuisine – Mexican, Chinese, Lebanese, Italian, French, German, Indian, and the world famous Tony Packo’s Hungarian Hot Dogs.
  • Shopping:  Westfield Shopping Mall in west Toledo includes Penney’s, Kauffmans, Pottery Barn, huge cinema complex, Border’s Books.  The brand new Levis Commons Shopping Center in Perrysburg, OH has upscale stores and dining in an outdoor venue.  Other stores include five Walmarts (2 Super Walmarts), Target, Kohls, Home Depot, Lowes and a number of different grocery stores – large and small.
